Ridiculously Easy Peanut Butter Dog Treats

I could not be more excited because I finally got to go home! There really is no place like home, especially when you're away at college. I couldn't wait to see my family, sleep in my own bed, and most of all be reunited with my puppy! I have been counting down the days for a LONG time. I have definitely come to have a new appreciation for my own home and hometown since moving away to school.

Since I knew I was going home I wanted to make a special treat for Cora, my puppy. There are tons of recipes out there for dog treats, but I wanted to keep things simple. I knew I had to include peanut butter, Cora LOVES peanut butter, and I didn't want to include a load of sugar. Here is my recipe for ridiculously easy Peanut Butter Dog Treats!

You will need:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  •  1/3 cup smooth peanut butter
  • 1 cup skim milk, or 1 cup hot water (NOT BOILING WATER)
  • 1 egg, this is optional you do not have to include it. The egg makes a dogs coat shiny (I did not include the egg in the treats I gave to my puppy)

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with tinfoil or parchment paper and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl combine the whole wheat flour and the baking powder.

Then, in the same mixing bowl add the milk, or hot water, and peanut butter.

Carefully mix the wet ingredients and the dry ingredients. If the dough is too dry add a little more milk or water, or if it is too wet add an additional tablespoon of flour until it is not too wet.

Place dough on counter and roll it out with a rolling pin, or flatten the dough out with your hands.

Use dog bone cookie cutters and cut the dough into various size dog biscuits. Place cut out dog bones on cookie sheet. Leave space between the bones on the cookie sheet because they will spread slightly and rise.

If the dough gets too sticky while you are cutting out out the bones sprinkle it with flour and it will decrease the stickiness.

Once all the dough is cut up bake the bones for twenty minutes at 375 degrees. The bones should be light brown when done. Allow the bones to cool before giving one your puppy!

Cora could smell the peanut butter as soon as I walked in the door. She gobbled down the biscuit as soon as I gave it too her and she now sits by her cookie jar in hopes of getting another one!

Be warned your dog will love these and will beg for more!!

If you make them tag me on instagram and use the hashtag #thesimplelife and go like my new page on Facebook!

    1. I kept mine in an airtight container and had them for three weeks. A lot of times it depends on where you store them and the climate, when it's cooler they last longer. Sorry I can't give you a specific answer! Thank you for stopping by my blog, have a wonderful day!

    2. Do you have to have whole wheat flour?

    3. No you can use all purpose flour!

    4. I think that using Brown Rice flour is much better for dogs, it's easier to digest. Many dogs are allergic to wheat. Anyway, when I bake for my dogs, I always use the Brown Rice flour.

    5. I now use all purpose gluten free flour because my pup has an allergy, but you should talk to your vet and see what they say is best :) I've never used brown rice flour before (I try to stay away from expensive gluten free flours), but if that's what's best for your pet then by all means use it! No two pets are alike :)

    8. I'm so glad your pup loves the treats!! They're definitely better than store bought and I love knowing and controlling what's in the treats. I feel so much better giving my pup treats that I know are good for her and not loaded with ingredients that I'm not even sure what it is. Give your sweet pup lots of pets for me and thank you so much for your comment!!

    1. It really depends on the size of the cutter you used. I used a small/medium cutter and got about 40 treats. Sorry I can't give you a more precise number. Thanks for stopping by my blog, have a great day!

    2. I use this recipe with my Bow Wow Bistro. It takes 4-6 minutes to bake them and makes about 55 biscuits. My pups love them! I have to stop myself from giving them more as they beg.

    4. Hi, in the recipe above it states 25 minutes and Chia said 4-6? Does this depend on the time as that is a large time difference.

  5. I added the egg and needed quite a bit more flour...maybe 1/4 c. plus some for the counter top each time I rolled and re-rolled. Just got a new corgi puppy and we're trying to bribe him to potty outside - I hope these treats will do the trick!

  8. Does this recipe make more of a crunchy or chewy treat

    ReplyDelete

    1. The treats are definitely more of a soft and chewy than crunchy. If you bake them longer they can be harder on top, but the center will still be soft and chewy. Thank you for stopping by my bog, have a great day!

  9. I just made this recipe, along with my Pumpkin Peanut Butter Oatmeal recipe for our pack (we have 3 rescues). They bake up softer than my recipe, and as I thought, they were gobbled up. 10. I made these treats a while ago and followed this recipe (which turned out great). But a week later they were starting to mold :( so idk if I did something wrong in the process, I baked them a little extra also. Was thinking maybe storing them in the fridge next time I make them?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm so sorry you had this problem! I've never had this happen. Did you include the egg? Because that could be part of the problem- if you do include it I would store the treats in the fridge- you can also freeze extra treats. Also if you do not allow the treats to completely cool before storing them condensation will build up and cause molding. You can always refrigerate treats though, I'm so sorry you had this problem and I hope this helps prevent it! Have a wonderful Wednesday!

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the advice!! Yes I did include the egg, maybe I'll try it without next time! Do the treats get hard at all if you store them in the freezer? Thinking about making them again this weekend!

      Delete
    3. I let mine thaw for a day to a day in a half in advance. And I spoil my pup and heat them up for a few seconds so they're not chilled for her. As long as they're thawed you don't have to hear them up. If you do decide to make them again let me know how they turn out! And I'd love to see pictures of your pup!

    4. Hi Nikki,
I've made cookies for my dog in the past that have had eggs and pumpkin in them and I find storing them in the freezer is the best way. I give them to her right from the freezer and she loves it, great for her teeth. This way they are good for up to 3 months. Hope this helps. Tammy

    1. I have never used garbanzo bean flour before so I can't attest to that. Regular gluten free all purpose flour would definitely work, but you may need to add more if the batter is too liquidy. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help! Have a great day!

  14. I used 1 cup flour, 1 cup oatmeal, and peanut butter with honey. Turned out beautiful, smelled wonderful. I tried it, I thought it was a bit bland, next time I'll add carrots, or a fruit. The dogs loved them! I got lots of kisses. Awesome base recipe, can't wait to experiment! They did turn out soft. I didn't use backing powder, I was out, and I did use half water half milk. Maybe why they were bland. Thank you so much. It was the best recipe I could find on pinterest.

    4. How do you add vegetables in these? Cooked? Raw? and how much?

      Delete
    5. I have added in carrots and just shredded raw carrots because I know my pup likes those. I'm sorry but I don't have an exact measurement of how much I added in, I kind of go by sight, but I would say probably around a handful of shredded carrot.

  17. I just made these this morning for my (almost 2yr. old) chocolate lab, Kalia. The only changes I made, is that I used spelt flour instead of whole wheat, and I used half milk and half water. I did not add the egg. I did have to add more flour then called for because it was very sticky. After they cooled, I was dying to give her one. She was willing to do all kinds of tricks for pieces of her cookie! She gives this 4 paws up! (her best rating). Thank you for posting!

  35. Thank you for this recipe, this is the first time I made homemade doggie bones. My dogs are both 6 years old and love their treats but when I made these they went nuts. I was a little confused on your directions with the 1 egg, being a baker I decided to use the egg as a egg wash, it made the bones shine, kept them soft and I had no problems with mold and they where on my counter for over 1 week in a air tight container (actually a glass jar w/cover). Try a different recipe, but going back to this one. My dogs; Stella and Zowee thanks you.

I tried the recipe today. It was a bit difficult because we don´t use cups as amount but this was only a small problem.

My dog likes the treats very much and my parents like them too ^^

  49. Just a thought as I'm reading through these comments. Several have asked about the treat being a more crispy treat. Consider keeping them in an oven at a very low (lowest setting) just for the purpose of "drying out," for a day or two. Another would be using a dehydrator. I make my sweet potato dog treats in there, after steaming them with a bunch of garlic. They're very wet starting out and I dehydrate them 8-10 hours for the texture I want.

    1. Thank you for the tip Tricia! Awhile ago I started leaving them in the oven overnight after baking (with the oven off) and they have crisped right up! Thank you for the tip and the sweet potato biscuits sound yummy!! I know my pup would be all over those! Have a great day :)

  50. Could I use oatmeal in place of the flour?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Personally I have never used oats for the recipe. I now use gluten free flour, but if you do use oats I would recommend grinding them into a flour. Watch the consistency of the dough as you may need more or less liquid. Sorry I cannot fully answer your question! If you make them with oats let me know how they turn out :)

  51. I am going to give it a try, i use only almond milk but i think it will be a great subsitute. Will let you know.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I only use almond milk now too and have not had a problem! Sometimes I need a little more almond milk than regular milk, but it all depends on the doughs consistency. Let me know how they turn out and how your pup likes them!! Happy baking :)

  52. Have you ever froze them? And if so, how long do you think they would keep?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have not frozen cooked dog treats, but I have frozen the dough before. The dough can be in the frozen for a number of months you just have to allow a few hours for it to soften before baking- I recommend leaving it in the fridge overnight to thaw before baking. I have not frozen baked treats, but I don't see why you couldn't. I would put them in an airtight container to prevent freezer burn, but I would try to use them quickly as freezing them may dry them out. Let me know if you do freeze them, I'd love to know!

  55. I just made these for my new rescue. I used 1 c. of nonfat milk that I made from dry. I skipped the egg, but needed a lot more flour than the recipe called for..about 5 additional tbsp to make the dough firm enough to roll out. The dog loved them and I will use the same modifications in the future.

    1. I'm so glad your new pup loves the treats! Any changes to the recipe are going to modify the consistency of the dough, thus the need for more flour. I'm glad the treats turned out for you!! Have a great day!

  56. The treats worked very well for my puppy, but I found that I needed to add more peanut butter, plus I couldn't get the peanut butter to even out enough, so there is a swirl of peanut butter in it.

    1. That's not bad at all, especially if your pup loves peanut butter ;) I'm guessing it's just how the batter was mixed. Was the dough dry? Did you use the egg? If the dough was dry more liquid could be added and that should make the dough moister and thus easier to mix the peanut butter. I'm glad your pup liked the treats though! Have s great day!!

  59. I made these treats for my two dogs and they loved them! But how do you store the treats? Because I had them in a Ziploc bag without any air and put in a cool dark cabinet and they molded after 3 days of making them!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Typically treats mold for a few reasons the biggest reason being if they're not 100% cool when you put them in a bag the moisture in the treats will make them mold. I store the treats in the fridge. You can also freeze the treats and take a small amount out as needed, I would definitely keep the thawed treats in the fridge though. I hope that helps, I'm sorry you're having that problem!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I ordered mine on Amazon for around $10 I think. I've seen biscuit shaped cookie cutters at Meijer and even some pet stores like PetSmart. You can always call a local pet store and see if they have any. When in doubt you can use a knife to cut the dough, it won't be perfect like a cutter is, but it gets the job done! I hope that helps you :)

  64. Can I replace the whole wheat flour with coconut flour?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've never made them with coconut flour so I cannot vouch for how they would turn out. Coconut flour and all purpose flour (or all purpose GF flour) have very different consistencies, so I don't think the ratios would be the same. I'm sorry I can't be more help, if you do try making them with coconut flour let me know what happens, I'd be curious to find out!

    1. It really depends on how big of a cutter you use. I used a small/medium sized one and got 25 treats. If you use a larger one you're going to get less and a smaller one will get less. Sorry I can't be more precise, but I hope that gives you a general idea. Let me know how they turn out and if your pups like them!

    1. I'm sorry the recipe didn't turn out with coconut flour. Coconut flour tends to be more dense and absorbs more liquid, so if you were to try coconut flour again I would recommend adding more liquid. I'm glad they turn out good with rice flour- I'm definitely going to keep that in mind!

  78. I made these yesterday for George. I'm not one of nature's bakers. George is a Ruby Cavalier King Charles and he is *choosy*. From the moment they went in the oven George installed himself in the kitchen. From the moment they came out the oven George wanted to sample. And then he was hooked. He spent all last evening on the want for his bikkies and today he's barking orders like a tyrant. He's never reacted to any foodstuff this mad-keen (except raw steak!). I made them digestive-biscuit shape, because that's the one biscuit-cutter I have. I think with the next batch I may up the peanut-butter a bit. Cavaliers generally speaking are too snooty to do tricks but good grief, I'm wondering if George wouldn't actually do a trick to get one of these. So.... here in London, Great Britain, you have a very admiring Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

  79. My dog has allergies to wheat so I make my own rice flour with my Nutribullet. He loves these treats. Using the rice flour I make, I have to increase the water by almost double in order to get the mixture to stick together. Also, I used chicken stock rather than water to give it a bit more flavor.

  84. Love this recipe. I used Almond flour instead of regular. I used almond milk instead of a dairy milk. I added minced carrots, parsley and mint to it. This made it an extra special treat because my doggy (Bosley) still loved it and the parsley and mint help sub as bad breath neutralizers. :) Now I have a great recipe for a grain/gluten free, non-diary treat for my boy <3

  89. About how many does this recipe make?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Hi Rachael,
I have researched and tried SEVERAL organic/healthy dog treat recipes over the last year and without any doubt, yours are the easiest and quickest to make. At the risk of sounding a bit nutty, I taste all the treats I make within reason (at first out of curiosity and now to compare them against each other) and yours taste the cleanest if that makes any sense. I made a few batches as most of my family have fur babies and it is near Christmas. I cut them out using Christmas cookie cutters which also changed their size so that all 10 dogs will have large Christmas treats to enjoy!
In one batch, I added 2 bananas just because I needed to get them out of my freezer. It didn't change taste or texture I think because I added less milk. I also used Lactose-free milk because that is all had in the fridge.
Anyway, I wanted to thank you for the recipe. It will be my go-to from now on. I will also share it on FB and like any/all your pages on any Social Media platforms your have!
Happy Holidays and thank you again, my two babies LOVE their new treats!
